# Smoke Test
This lab walks you through a quick smoke test to make sure things are working.
## Test
```
kubectl run nginx --image=nginx --port=80 --replicas=3
```
```
deployment "nginx" created
```
```
kubectl get pods -o wide
```
2016-07-08 01:19:34 +03:00
```
kubectl expose deployment nginx --type NodePort
```
```
service "nginx" exposed
> Note that --type=LoadBalancer will not work because we did not configure a cloud provider when bootstrapping this cluster.
Grab the `NodePort` that was setup for the nginx service:
2016-07-08 21:40:30 +03:00
```
2016-09-11 15:20:01 +03:00
NODE_PORT=$(kubectl get svc nginx --output=jsonpath='{range .spec.ports[0]}{.nodePort}')
2016-07-08 21:40:30 +03:00
```
### Create the Node Port Firewall Rule
#### GCP
2016-07-08 01:26:05 +03:00
```
2016-07-08 21:39:58 +03:00
gcloud compute firewall-rules create kubernetes-nginx-service \
2016-07-09 03:57:07 +03:00
--allow=tcp:${NODE_PORT} \
--network kubernetes
2016-07-08 01:26:05 +03:00
```
2016-07-09 04:13:36 +03:00
Grab the `EXTERNAL_IP` for one of the worker nodes:
2016-07-08 01:25:10 +03:00
```
2016-09-11 15:20:01 +03:00
NODE_PUBLIC_IP=$(gcloud compute instances describe worker0 \
2016-07-09 04:13:36 +03:00
--format 'value(networkInterfaces[0].accessConfigs[0].natIP)')
2016-07-08 01:25:10 +03:00
```
2016-09-11 15:20:01 +03:00
#### AWS
```
SECURITY_GROUP_ID=$(aws ec2 describe-security-groups \
--filters "Name=tag:Name,Values=kubernetes" | \
jq -r '.SecurityGroups[].GroupId')
```
```
aws ec2 authorize-security-group-ingress \
--group-id ${SECURITY_GROUP_ID} \
--protocol tcp \
--port ${NODE_PORT} \
--cidr 0.0.0.0/0
```
Grab the `EXTERNAL_IP` for one of the worker nodes:
```
NODE_PUBLIC_IP=$(aws ec2 describe-instances \
--filters "Name=tag:Name,Values=worker0" | \
jq -j '.Reservations[].Instances[].PublicIpAddress')
```
2017-01-14 21:00:06 +03:00
#### Azure
```shell
az network nsg rule create -g kubernetes \
-n kubernetes-allow-nginx \
--access allow \
--destination-address-prefix '*' \
--destination-port-range ${NODE_PORT} \
--direction inbound \
--nsg-name kubernetes-nsg \
--protocol tcp \
--source-address-prefix '*' \
--source-port-range '*' \
--priority 1002
```
Grab the `EXTERNAL_IP` for one of the worker nodes:
```
2017-01-14 21:18:32 +03:00
NODE_PUBLIC_IP=$(az network public-ip show -g kubernetes \
-n worker0-pip --query "ipAddress" -otsv)
2017-01-14 21:00:06 +03:00
```
---
2016-07-09 04:13:36 +03:00
Test the nginx service using cURL:
2016-07-08 21:39:58 +03:00
2016-07-08 01:25:10 +03:00
```
2016-07-09 04:13:36 +03:00
curl http://${NODE_PUBLIC_IP}:${NODE_PORT}
2016-07-08 01:25:10 +03:00
```
